It was founded by Mario del Grosso, harpsichordist
and harpsichord builder. It involves musicians specialised in the study
and performance of XVIIth century music, mainly by G. Frescobaldi and C.
Monteverdi. The Ensemble il Dardo is often invited in occasion of important
ancient music festivals and it carried out some recordings for Stradivarius.

The concerts of the Ensemble il Dardo are characterized to be filologic
performances of instrumental and vocal musics of XVIIth century and
mainly by Girolamo Frescobaldi and Claudio Monteverdi the main italian
composers of that time. They were almost contemporary (Monteverdi was
born in Cremona in 1567 and died in Venezia in 1643 however Frescobaldi
was born in Ferrara in 1583 and died in Roma in 1643). Monteverdi is
recognised as the inventor of the opera, and by the other side Frescobaldi
was one of the most important author of instrumental music. The most
important characteristic of Monteverdi is the deep correlation between
music and words who become a single thing in his vocal music. Great
composer and organist, it was in the field of instrumental music that
Frescobaldi got a big reputation around Europe during his time.
